Article written by Ronald Stenger; Ron shares practical insights on how fire departments can equip their teams for hazmat response readiness without overcomplicating operations.

When responding to emergencies, engine and ladder companies are frequently the first units on scene—whether it’s a fire, traffic accident, medical call, or hazardous materials (hazmat) incident.

While full-scale hazmat teams bring specialized equipment and advanced training, the initial actions taken by first-arriving units are critical to life safety, incident stabilization, and property conservation. Engine and ladder companies play a vital role in early recognition, isolation, and initial mitigation of hazmat events. Equipping these frontline units with the right tools allows personnel to safely manage the situation until a hazmat team arrives. The proper gear enhances firefighter safety, supports quick decision making, and protects the public from further harm.

This article outlines a comprehensive cache of hazmat equipment that engine or ladder companies can carry to support their role in hazmat response. Companies should follow any guidelines set forth by their departments for response.

    DETECTION AND MONITORING EQUIPMENT

Early identification of hazardous substances is crucial. The following tools help responders determine the type and severity of the hazard.

Multigas detectors (e.g., 4-gas meters): Detect oxygen levels, combustible gases (LEL), carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide.

Multigas detector with photoionization detection (PID): For volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Ninety percent of hazmat runs involve VOCs.

Passive multigas or single gas (CO) for first-in EMS bags.

Early CO detection.

Radiation detectors: Monitor for alpha, beta, and gamma radiation. It is possible a response could involve a company that may deal with radiation, and it could take a hazmat team a while to respond.

pH paper/strips: Used for identifying acids or bases on for liquids.

PH will help to determine if it is an acid or a base. A 4- or 5-gas meter can’t
detect this.

Fluoride test paper (F Paper) used for detecting the presence of fluoride ions involving hydrofluoric acid and others.

This paper will turn bright yellow.

Thermal imaging camera (TIC): While mainly used for fire, TICs can detect temperature differences in hazmat spills or vapor clouds. They can also be useful for determining the amount of material in some tanks.

Temperature gun with at least a 50:1 ratio.

See the temperature of tanks, drums, etc.

Determine if something is polymerizing.

Identify rapid temperature change.

Hazmat reference apps or books [e.g., NIOSHPocket Guide, Emergency Response Guide (ERG)]: Crucial for interpreting readings, planning response, and determining initial actions. This should be on all apparatus and medic units.

Binoculars will assist with seeing down range. Remember the ERG: 75 feet for solids, 150 feet for liquids, and 330 feet for gas.

    PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE)

Engine companies should be equipped with basic levels of PPE that allow them to operate safely in a potentially hazardous environment, including the following.

Level B/C Protection:

Splash suits or chemical-resistant coveralls (Tychem or equivalent).

Nitrile or chemical-resistant gloves.

Chemical-resistant boots with steel toe and shank.

Safety goggles or face shields.

P100 filters or air-purifying respirators (APRs) if trained and allowed by policy.

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA): Already standard on engines but essential for any hazmat response involving unknown or toxic atmospheres.

Turnout gear: Can provide some basic protection for some hazmat runs. Use department protocols and training.

Chemical tape: For use with chemical gloves.

    DECONTAMINATION EQUIPMENT

While engine companies won’t set up full decon lines, they can initiate emergency gross decontamination. Equipment for this includes the following.

5-gallon buckets or garden hoses: For quick water supply in emergencies. Garden hoses should be able to connect to the engine with the correct adapters.

Brushes, soap, and towels: For manual decon of personnel or victims. Brushes should be soft and hard-soft for personnel and victims and hard on equipment and PPE.

Disposable coveralls: To replace contaminated clothing or PPE after decon. If this is not an option, carry a change of uniforms while on shift.

Plastic sheeting and tape: For isolating areas and as a barrier for decon areas.

Decon solutions (Simple Green, Dawn, Clorox).

Clorox can be measured out and stored for use.

Decon pools: Can be used for decon and containment for spills, leaking gas tanks, and saddle tanks.

1 Photo by dear2627/ShutterStock.com.

    CONTAINMENT AND SPILL CONTROL TOOLS

Engine companies may be able to contain minor spills and prevent product from spreading.

Absorbent pads or socks (Oil-Dri, Speedy Dry): For hydrocarbon or chemical spills.

Booms, pads, and pigs: To control runoff and isolate contaminated areas. They can get bulky for storage on apparatus- Different types include hydrocarbon, acid, polar Solvents, water-resistant. Some pads will be represented by the color of the pad. Boom and pigs are the same. Pigs are around 6 feet long. Pads are 24 inches by 24 inches.

Plug and dike material: To seal small leaks in drums or containers.

Putty material.

Wood material (wedges, golf tees).

Commercial made items.

5-gallon buckets: For isolating small leaking containers and for storage of equipment and supplies to be used in the emergency.

Nonsparking tools: To reduce ignition risk during handling.

Basic plug kit (items from any hardware store or commercial buy).

Shovels: Round and flat shovels.

Hazmat SKED: To remove unconscious victims.

    SCENE SAFETY AND ISOLATION GEAR

Controlling the perimeter and maintaining safety are among the first steps of hazmat response. Make sure to have the following.

Barrier tape (hazmat, danger, fire line): For cordoning off hot, warm, and cold zones.

Traffic cones: To redirect traffic and identify the hazardous area.

    DOCUMENTATION AND REPORTING TOOLS

Accurately recording readings, exposures, and decisions is essential.

Notebooks or field worksheets: For documenting air monitoring data and incident actions.

Camera or tablet: For photographing scenes or documenting chemical labels and placards.

Exposure reports for personnel to use.

Preplans of buildings and other locations that may have hazardous materials.

An engine or ladder company’s role in hazmat incidents centers on recognition, isolation, initial protection, and support for incoming specialized hazmat teams. The equipment outlined above enables firefighters to operate safely and effectively during the critical early moments of an incident— without exceeding the scope of their training or authority.

Each department should customize its hazmat equipment cache based on its unique risk profile, considering factors such as proximity to highways, rail lines, industrial zones, agricultural areas, and chemical storage facilities. Just as important, personnel must be regularly trained on the correct use of detection tools, PPE, containment materials, and decontamination procedures.

With the right preparation, gear, and situational awareness, engine and ladder companies can serve as a vital first line of defense, helping to protect life, property, and the environment until full hazmat resources arrive.

Do you know what version of Honeywell Safety Suite you are using? As Honeywell continues to release new features and bug fixes, it's critical to keep your equipment updated and maintained at regular intervals.

Most first responders already have an established schedule for their meters and perform routine bump checks and calibrations to ensure their meters are ready to go in case of a call.

What they may not consider is that their host laptop also needs regular maintenance. It is good practice to power on and update the laptop at regular intervals.

Here are three steps to keeping your laptop ready for action:

Run Windows update and download any driver and software updates.

Run Safety Suite Responder updates. Currently, the software will not automatically update. Users need to manually check and download updates from the Honeywell Safety Suite website when they become available.

After performing all updates to your host laptop, you should perform a connectivity check with your wireless meters.

Taking these quick, preventative maintenance steps will help ensure your equipment is ready when you need it. If you have any questions concerning these updates or running Honeywell Safety Suite, give our service team a call at 888-972-3389 or visit our Safety Suite Resources page.

We launched our introductory webinar for Safety Suite Responder in June of 2022. Since then, there have been a couple of updates to the computer specifications, and the time frame in which to convert your old Pro RAE Guardian licenses for new Safety Suite Responder keys has been extended until the end of September 2022.

Along with these changes, we also found a need to elaborate more on the installation process, starting up and logging into Safety Suite Responder, RAE Link setup, and troubleshooting common issues. Our newest video, “Safety Suite Responder: Installation, Setup, & Troubleshooting” addresses all these topics and more.

We at All Safe Industries hope this video is a valuable resource to you and look forward to helping you through this transition and with your other safety and gas detection needs.

For 2022, our booth will feature technical detection equipment including radiation detectors from Teledyne FLIR and the RedWave Threat ID FTIR Spectrometer. We will also be showcasing a respirator washer from Georgia Steel, a Baltimore-based company.

Unmanned Aerial Systems are an up and coming topic in the world of detection. Accompanying us to IAFC is the DJI Matrice 300 drone with the MUVE C360 from FLIR. This combination is a game changer for identifying threats and monitoring chemical hazards remotely.

A key highlight for us this year is participating in a seminar entitled “Take Command of Your Response – Connected Safety for Hazmat Teams.” Steve Curry, an All Safe Industries hazmat training instructor, and the panel will address the issue of connected safety in the context of a hazmat team. This talk will be held on June 11th at 4:00pm in room Peal B.

With lots to learn and offer at this year’s IAFC Hazmat Conference, we hope you all choose to join us. Stay tuned for more updates and events happening with All Safe at IAFC!

It’s that time again already? FDIC is approaching fast. We will have a double booth this year with a range of equipment from high end detection technologies to simple hazmat solutions.

This year we will be showcasing the FLIR MUVE C360 Multi-Gas Detector attached to our demo DJI Matrice 300 drone. The MUVE C360 can be completely integrated with DJI Matrice unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to provide real-time continuous monitoring of chemical hazards while on the move. The sensor block contains 8 sensors and is configured for O2, LEL, CO, H2S, PID, NO2, Cl2, and SO2.

New to our booth this year is the G7 line of gas detection from Blackline Safety. Blackline detectors feature innovative direct-to-cloud wireless functionality. The G7C Multi-Gas Detector is ideal for lone worker or personal monitoring, while the G7 EXO is area monitor can be used to wirelessly monitor site perimeters, confined spaces, or hazmat incidents. With its robust feature set and rugged construction, the EXO is built to withstand anything you or mother nature can throw at it.

Another new product is the OUR Claw and ZMac card from In Our Gear, LLC. OUR Claw was designed to help hazmat technicians interpret results from reagent paper strips in the hot zone and directly communicate these to the entry supervisor. The ZMac Card combines inexpensive detection methodology (chemical test papers) with useful information needed to form a risk-based decision response or action plan.

Come by and visit us at Booth #1143 to demo the equipment we’ll have on hand. As always, we’ll be ready to provide quick customer service and attention to detail that define All Safe.

There are big changes coming for RAE Systems wireless instruments in 2022. Honeywell is phasing out their ProRAE Guardian software and migrating to Honeywell Safety Suite Responder.

Honeywell is encouraging ProRAE Guardian users to make the transition as soon as possible by offering to exchange your current ProRAE Guardian key to a Safety Suite key for FREE through June 30th, 2022.

To help you through the transition process, we are holding a 1 hour webinar on April 13th to address common concerns and frequently asked questions.

Key topics and features you can expect to see addressed in this webinar:

Device management and real-time data are now available in ONE platform with Safety Suite, eliminating the need for ProRAE Studio for device management AND ProRAE Guardian for real time data.

Safety Suite is available as both Cloud-Based and On-Premise installations, adding additional flexibility on how the software can be deployed. The On-Premise option includes the ability to build a virtual private cloud base, providing you with the flexibility to further secure your data behind your own firewalls.

And many more topics, including how to access the program, how to migrate product keys, and account set-up.

Please join us April 13th, 2022 at 10am EST, as we dive deeper into many of the new features, the exchange process, and what to expect next.

2020 was anything but typical. Few of us could have imagined the lockdowns, the mask wearing, the travel bans, and the sudden shift to working from home. Now everyone is itching for normalcy. For us, the return to FDIC represents just that.

Technical safety equipment is the core focus of All Safe Industries. This year, we are bringing a number of new detection lines and products as well as some favorites like our inCase Calibration Kits.

The Draeger X-act 7000 is the replacement to the CMS Analyzer. The X-act 7000 uses cassettes of MicroTubes to allow precise measurements of gases in the low ppb range. Pairing the X-act 7000 with the pump coupler and Mark II X-am pump allows for remote samples of carcinogenic or toxic substances from a safe distance.

Another exciting new detector is the ChemProX. Replacing the ChemPro 100i, the ChemproX offers detection of a wide range of CWAs and TICs along with wireless network connectivity and built-in GPS. Paired with the CBRN kit, the ChemProX offers full CBRN detection capability.

The Teledyne-FLIR G510 GC-MS is quickly becoming one of our more popular detection technologies for identifying unknown solids, liquids, and gases. Hazmat teams choose the G510 for its ease of use and dependability in the field.

We hope that you visit us at Booth #702 this year at FDIC 2021 to check out a sampling of the technical safety equipment we provide. As always, our knowledgeable and helpful staff will be at the booth to help you with any questions you may have. If you cannot attend, give us a call and get a quote or sign up for a virtual demo.

Starting with ProRAE Suite, then ProRAE Studio II and now Honeywell Safety Suite Device Configurator. I know, I know; change can be hard. We get used to something and we want to keep using it. It’s comfortable. But let us stop and think about the other changes we’ve had through these times.

We’ve gone from gasoline to hybrid to electric cars; from VCR tapes to DVDs to streaming; from bag phones to flip phones to smart phones. What was that, now a watch phone? Change is constant and it is happening faster and faster. So how do we deal with it? I saw a bumper sticker once that said, “Get in, sit down, shut up and hang on!”. Yeah, that seems about right. In other words; embrace it, roll with it, dive in head first. And when you need some help, phone a friend.

All Safe Industries has been a Rae Systems Distributor since 1998. We can help. Give us a call; our number is easy to remember: 88-89-SAFETY (888-972-3389). Let’s figure it out together. Because our job is a safer you.

The MX908 High-Pressure Mass Spectrometer Trace Detector from 908 Devices quickly identified the cocaine on our $10 bill.

You may have heard that up to 90% of all US currency contains trace amounts of cocaine. We put our MX908 High-Pressure Mass Spectrometer Trace Detector to the test to see if it could find any on our money.

The process was easy:

We swabbed a $10 bill with a trace sampling strip.

Set the MX908 to Drug Hunter mode.

Inserted the swab into the trace module.

Ran the analysis.

60 seconds later, bingo! A positive result.

With the built-in Drug Hunter algorithms virtually eliminating potential false positives, we can be confident that our bill did in fact contain traces of cocaine.

While cocaine is not lethal in trace amounts, Fentanyl is. Other forms of detection, like Raman and FTIR, can be fooled by heavy concentrations of cutting agents. The MX908, on the other hand, can identify Fentanyl cut to 1% or less, despite cutting agents or the presence of other drugs.

Finding a trace of Fentanyl on the outside of a container would direct police and other responders to proceed with extra caution after donning the appropriate PPE. Additionally, readings from the MX908 are admissible, defendable evidence that can secure probable cause, facilitate warrants, and
generate seizures.

The MX908 is a powerful instrument that is also easy to use. Its sensitive trace detection technology makes it ideal for police departments or hazmat teams. Contact us for more information or to schedule a demo.

Detection is in our DNA. As a technical safety supplier since 1996, we have a long history of providing the best in gas detection. Whether dealing with reliable standbys like the MultiRAE or AreaRAE or new detectors like the Honeywell BW Ultra, we continue to offer the best in service and product support.

We are also keen to offer new and exciting technologies, like the MX908 high-pressure mass spectrometer. The MX908 can detect trace levels of vapors, liquids, and gases and is a powerful tool when dealing with suspected opiods like Fentanyl.

Of course, even the best equipment is insufficient when used improperly. Training tools like the HazSim Pro 2.0 allow users to receive hands-on detector training in a safe, controlled setting before having to use the equipment in the field.

New this year, All Safe Industries has begun offering on-site training courses on topics such as general hazmat, detection technology, and chemistry of hazmat. It is just one more way for us to help you stay safer.

If you are attending FDIC, make sure to visit us at Booth #334 where we’ll be showcasing some of our newest product lines as well as a few favorites. Even if you do not plan to attend, we hope that our quick sales support, product expertise, and attention to detail continue to be a service to you.

The ACD Cal 2000 alongside a RAE Systems MultiRAE Lite.

Bump tests and calibrations are important
aspects of any gas detection program. While calibration gases are excellent for bumping
and calibrating gas detectors, conventional cal gas cylinders also present a
few challenges, most notably shelf life, transportation restrictions, and
shipping costs.

Calibration gas generators are an alternative to traditional calibration gas cylinders. These generators use calibration sources, also sometimes referred to as cells, to create cal gas on demand.

Although the initial investment for a generator is greater than for calibration cylinders, cal gas generators may provide significant advantages in the long run.

1. Most cal sources do not degrade

Cal gases must be replaced routinely due to their shelf life. Non-reactive gases, like Carbon Monoxide and Isobutylene, are relatively stable and can last over 3 years in a cylinder, while reactive gases like Chlorine (Cl2), Ammonia (NH3), and Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) have shorter shelf lives, typically between 9 - 12 months.

Most calibration sources, on the other hand, do not have a shelf life. Cal gas generators create gases on demand, which means gas degradation is not a factor, and the gas will be delivered to the instrument at the intended concentration.

2. Cal sources may be used for unstable gases

Some gases, like Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2), are too unstable to practically keep in a cylinder at all. For these gases, calibration generators are the only practical option.

Although gas cylinders are often used for Chlorine, gas generators may still prove to be a practical choice to avoid frequent replacement of the calibration gas cylinders. Chlorine has a shorter shelf life than most other gases and requires special precautions to preserve the Cl2 in the cylinder.

A cal gas generator is the best method for calibrating a gas detector to Chlorine Dioxide (ClO2).

3. Cal sources are not restricted for shipment and transport

Since they are classified as a Class 2.2 Hazardous Material, cal gas cylinders require special training to ship according to D.O.T. regulations. As a result, they are costly to ship.

Over time, the shipping costs associated with purchasing new cylinders add up. Cal sources are non-hazardous for transport and can be shipped without extra labeling or fees.

4. Some cal gas generators may be set to variable concentrations

There are few standards for calibration concentrations across different brands of gas detector. RKI instruments, for instance, are calibrated to 25 ppm Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), while the current line of RAE Systems instruments call for 10 ppm H2S.

Gas generators provide an easy solution for users who require multiple concentrations of calibration gas. Some gas generators, like the ACD Cal 2000, allow for gas concentrations to be adjusted on the fly, simplifying the calibration process and reducing the demand for additional calibration cylinders.

5. Cal gas generators can help you save money

Calibration gas generators will likely not be the best option for completely replacing calibration cylinders. The fact that they can only calibrate one sensor at a time makes them prohibitive for calibrating standard 4-gas meters or other configurations where multiple gases can be calibrated at once.

For reactive gases, however, calibration generators can provide significant savings over time in both calibration cost and shipping costs. For some users, a compromised approach of using gas cylinders for non-reactive multi-gas mixtures and a calibration generator for reactive gases may be the most cost efficient option.

An AreaRAE Steel sits atop a PTC2 Kit, which is the predecessor to our inCase Calibration Kits.

The original AreaRAE made a good run. After its release in 2001, the wireless gas meter became a staple of fire departments and hazmat teams around the country.

The meter's broad range of available sensors, top tier PID technology, Gamma detection, and unparalleled wireless capability helped revolutionize gas detection. But all good things must eventually come to an end.

Last year, Honeywell—now the parent company of RAE Systems—announced the end of life for the AreaRAE. While replacement parts are expected to be available until November 30, 2019, it is recommended that all AreaRAE users migrate to one of the two newer, more capable AreaRAE models: the AreaRAE Plus or the AreaRAE Pro.

The new AreaRAE Plus and Pro expand on the solid foundation laid by the classic models. They offer an even broader selection of sensor and PID options, and increase the number of gases the gas monitor can detect at the same time from 5 to 7 and adds the ability for environmental monitoring with the new RAEMet sensor.

The AreaRAE Plus and Pro also expand the line's wireless capability with standard long-range ISM radio, a secondary Mesh radio to communicate to other wireless instruments, and optional Wi-Fi connectivity.

Our exclusive Two-Unit Rapid Deployment Kit includes two AreaRAE gas meters, two spare Li-Ion batteries, and two standalone battery chargers in a tough rolling case with pass-thru charging to power all components.

Just as with the older AreaRAEs, the new models are available as either single units or in a four-unit Rapid Deployment Kit. All Safe Industries has also developed a two-unit RDK as an alternative for people who want a smaller, more manageable form factor.

RAE Systems periodically runs trade-in programs that make upgrading to new AreaRAEs even simpler.

Since calibration gases have a
limited shelf life, they have to be replaced routinely. Some cylinders may be
emptied and shipped back to the manufacturer to be reused, but the majority of
cal cylinders need to be disposed of—or preferably—recycled.

While the chemicals contained in the cylinders may be dangerous at higher concentrations, calibration gases appear at much lower concentrations and do not typically pose a hazard.

Calibration gas cylinders are still considered hazardous, however, because the gas is compressed inside the cylinder. For this reason, calibration cylinders require a few extra steps for recycling or disposal.

Step 1: Release Gas from Cylinder

The first step is to drain the cylinder of all pressure. This can be accomplished by bleeding off the gas with a preset flow regulator. Always perform this step in a well-ventilated area.

Step 2: Remove Pin Using Recycling Tool

Use a cylinder recycling tool to push the valve stem into the cylinder. This step is a clear indication that the cylinder is empty and cannot hold pressure.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to never use a recycling tool on an reusable cylinder, since the process will render the cylinder useless.

The ASI-4250 recycling tool is used for most cylinders, the notable exception being 34L steel cylinders. are convenient portable gas detection systems.

Recycling tools are available with either male or female threads. It is critical that the right tool is used. The ASI-4250 is the most common recycling tool. It is used on all aluminum and larger steel cylinders. The ASI-4260 is used on the 34L steel cylinders.

The recycling tool is used by simply threading it into the cylinder and slowly turning the handle clockwise until the valve stem falls into the cylinder.

Step 3: Mark the exterior of the cylinder as empty

Write “Empty” on the outside of the cylinder. Even with the pin removed, it is helpful to have a more immediate visual reminder that the cylinder is empty and no longer a hazardous material.

Step 4: Dispose, Recycle, or Ship Cylinder

When these steps have been completed, you may dispose or recycle the cylinder according to local regulations.

Regulators control the flow of gas from the gas cylinder to the meter.

Using the correct regulator is essential for getting the best performance from your gas meter. The wrong regulator could bog down a pump, lead to inaccurate readings after calibration, or even be completely incompatible with your calibration cylinder.

Three variables to consider when buying a new regulator are threading, flow rate, and reactiveness of the gas in the cylinder.

1. Threading

Regulator threading is the most obvious factor in selecting a regulator. Calibration cylinders are available with two different threading systems. Larger 103L steel cylinders and all aluminum cylinders have internal threads, while the smaller 34L steel cyinders have external threads.

A regulator with external threading will simply not fit a cylinder with external threading, and vice versa. There are no conversion adapters. If you end up with an incompatible set-up, the only solution is to replace either the regulator or the gas, both costly options.

Fortunately, identifying the right regulator threading is not difficult. 34L, 58L, and all EcoSmart reusable cylinders use C-10, male threaded regulators. The 34L steel cylinder uses a CGA-600, female threaded regulator.

The only gases that can be put in a 34L steel cylinder are non-reactive gases like Methane, Isobutylene, and Carbon Monoxide. Any gas mixture containing a reactive gas, like Hydrogen Sulfide or Sulfur Dioxide, requires an aluminum cylinder.

Pro Tip: Use 105L cylinders instead of 34L for non-reactive gases. Non-reactive gases have double the shelf life of 4-gas mixes, meaning the gas is less likely to be wasted and you may share one regulator between both cylinders.

Gas meters with attachable pumps may also be used with a demand flow regulator.

2. Flow Rate

Every gas meter has a recommended flow rate for calibration and bump testing. Recommended flow rates are generally listed in the gas detector manual, but they typically fall in the 0.5 to 1.0 LPM range (click here for a list of recommended flow rates).

Using a regulator with too high of a flow rate can lead to flooded sensors and wasted gas. A regulator with too low of a flow rate, on the other hand, puts extra strain on a pump and will under-supply gas to the sensors.

Using a demand flow regulator
with pumped meters ensures that a meter is supplied only the amount of gas required.
Unlike preset flow regulators, demand flow regulators rely on pump draw to
actuate the release of gas. This not only provides the sensors with exactly the
amount of gas the pump provides but also best simulates how the meter samples
the atmosphere in a confined space.

Although initially more costly, demand flow regulators add an extra level of convenience in addition to being the most efficient way to supply gas to the sensors.

3. Reactiveness

Not all regulators are compatible with all gases. Since extra-reactive gases like Chlorine (Cl2), Ammonia (NH3), Hydrogen Chloride (HCl), and Phosphine (PH3) can corrode the internals of standard regulators, they require regulators with stainless steel internals.

Additionally, extra reactive cylinders tend to be "sticky" and can leave residues inside the regulator. It is a good idea to dedicate a regulator to each of these gases, rather than using the same regulator for multiple gases.

Helpful Hint: All demand flow regulators offered by All Safe Industries are approved for extra-reactive gases and are provided at no additional cost.

The Bottom Line

As long as you keep threading, flow rate, and gas reactiveness in mind, you should be able to avoid costly purchase mistakes and select the right regulator for your gas meter and application every time.

The AreaRAE Pro is poised to set a new standard in wireless gas detection.

When RAE Systems first released the AreaRAE in 2001, it's wireless capability was revolutionary in gas detection. But technology has changed a lot since then. Many of us were still running 56K modems on our desktops and while our cell phones weren't quite bricks, they were far removed from the sleak and powerful smartphones just about all of us carry to day. No doubt the original AreaRAE has been a work horse for the past 15 years, but it was time for a reboot.

The new AreaRAE gas monitors from Honeywell build on the tradition of the original AreaRAE but offers several major improvements and updates, to keep the AreaRAE at the pinacle of wireless gas detection.

Two New Models:

The AreaRAE is now offered in two models: the AreaRAE Plus and the AreaRAE Pro. The major advantage of the Pro is that it offers a ppb resolution PID sensor, a gamma sensor option, and the included RAEMet environmental sensor. The Plus offers a 0.1ppm resolution PID sensor and the option to add a RAEMet sensor. The Plus is geared towards industry and environmental applications, while the Pro is ideal for hazmat and emergency response.

Redesigned Chassis:

The housing has been completely redesigned. It offers warning LEDs strategically placed to provide 360 degree visibilty. The 108db audible alarm is noticeably louder than most meters. One of the few downsides to the new line of AreaRAEs is the increase in size. While most technology trends smaller over time, the AreaRAE has gotten bigger, but not unnecessarily so. The increase in size is a worthwhile compromise to accomodate improved battery life, sensor capability, and wireless options.

Fortunately for users familiar with other RAE Systems instruments, the new AreaRAEs maintain the traditional 3-button operation and menus comparable to the MultiRAE line.

Expanded Sensor Options:

The new AreaRAE line sets itself apart in its configuration ability. Both the Plus and Pro models support a PID and up to 6 combustible or electrochemical sensors, which means the meters can monitor up to 7 gases simultaneously. In addition to these sensor options, The Pro can be outfitted with Gamma, which does not occupy a sensor slot.

The AreaRAE Plus shown in a Rapid Deployment Kit (RDK) which includes 4 AreaRAEs in a Pelican case.

Unprecedented Wireless Capability:

Keeping the focus on wireless gas detection, the AreaRAE is outfitted with unparalleled wireless capability. Every new AreaRAE comes standard long-range ISM radio to communicate directly to a RAE Link 3 Host and Mesh radio to transmit data from other wireless meters like the QRAE 3 and MultiRAE, essentially eliminating the need for an additinal RAELink Mesh in applications where the AreaRAE and other wireless instruments are used side by side.

GPS is now standard with every AreaRAE, and WiFi capability is now an option. While it is not currently available, low-energy Bluetooth will also be an option.

The Takeaway:

The AreaRAE and AreaRAE Pro are welcome upgrades to the already tested and proven AreaRAE brand. Paired with ProRAE Guardian software, the AreaRAE becomes part of a powerful and easily deployable gas detection system. The fact that the AreaRAEs can talk to other instruments like the ToxiRAE Pro, QRAE 3, and MultiRAE and relay this information back to a RAELink 3 allows for even more monitoring versatility for teams with a range of instruments.

The Zika virus is spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes.

We had a nightly ritual when I was growing up. Before the power went out, which was generally around 10:00pm, we would walk around the house and exterminate as many mosquitoes as we could find. It was not unusual to see my dad clapping in the air or lunging at the wall with an exaggerated swatting motion, celebrating when his hand landed on one of the nearly invisible insects.

Even though hunting mosquitoes was a cheap form of entertainment, it wasn’t just a game. For seven years, my family lived in Burkina Faso, a sub-Saharan country in West Africa. Each mosquito had the potential of spreading serious illness, particularly malaria, to our family.

If you have watched the news recently, you have undoubtedly heard about the Zika virus and the debilitating birth defects it can cause. South America has already seen the virus spread like wildfire. While pandemic forecasts are not uncommon—whether it’s bird flu, swine flu, or ebola–Zika poses a significant risk in this country, and with the confirmed transmission of the Zika virus by mosquitoes in Miami, its spread to other parts of the United States appears to be likely. Since there is currently no cure or vaccine, prevention is the best defense.

Zika is spread primarily in two ways: from the bite from an infected Aedes mosquito or through sexual contact with an infected person. While the effects of Zika are generally mild in most people, the virus can cause devastating birth defects to a fetus in the womb. It is for this reason that preventing its spread is critical.

Our Zika Prevention Kit conforms to CDC specifications and contains items to help prevent mosquito bites and Zika infection.

Preventing mosquito bites is the most effective way to prevent contracting Zika. If possible, avoid traveling to areas where Zika is being transmitted. Stay indoors when practical, and before going outside, consider covering up with long pants and a long-sleeved shirt or applying insect repellent.

Remove habitat that harbors mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Buckets, uncovered trash cans, bird baths, decorative ponds, and other places water may sit for a week or more is a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. Remove this water or use standing water tablets to eradicate mosquito larva before developing into adult mosquitoes. Maintaining foliage and landscaping can also help deter the congregation of mosquitoes.

Use protection when having sex. This step is especially crucial for women who are pregnant. Zika can be transmitted sexually even when no other symptoms occur. The CDC recommends that all pregnant couples to use condoms throughout the pregnancy, and for couples wanting to conceive to get tested if concerned that they have contracted the virus.

Despite the very real dangers of Zika, it is not time to panic or overreact. The effects of Zika are mild, sometimes unnoticeable, in healthy adults. And microcephaly, the primary birth defect caused by the virus, is estimated to occur in less than 1% of babies born to infected mothers. Still, we all need to be prepared to take preventive measures.

But taking precautions doesn’t always translate into 100% success. During my childhood in West Africa, I contracted malaria more times than I can remember. Our nightly ritual of squashing mosquitoes could not completely protect us, neither could mosquito repellent.

It is important to note that despite a few similarities, Zika is not malaria. However, with the introduction of a new mosquito-borne threat, I find myself scanning the walls and corners of my home with a renewed intensity. After years of complacency, I find myself on the hunt again.

Conducting preliminary diagnostics and fresh air cal outside with a MultiRAE Lite.

1. Use filters as recommended by the manufacturer

Most gas meters use a filter of some kind to keep dust and liquids away from the internals. A meter without a filter is vulnerable and more prone to needing repair. Filters are cheap. Use them and replace them regularly.

2. Test the pump if your meter has one

A pumped gas detector cannot sufficiently pull a sample if the pump is weak. Test the pump by placing a finger over the inlet before using the monitor. If the pump stall is triggered, the pump should be good to go.

3. Don’t expose LEL sensor to poisons

Silicone-containing, lead-containing, or sulfur-containing compounds can kill catalytic bead LEL sensor response fairly quickly. Even Armor All on the dashboard could be enough to cut the sensor’s life short. If you suspect your meter has been exposed to a poison, replace the filters. If you choose to clean your meter, do so with a damp cloth and skip the solvents, since these could also contain sensor poisons.

4. Only fresh air cal in fresh air

The most frequent cause of negative readings is a bad fresh air cal. Conducting a fresh air cal in a garage or on a manufacturing line where toxic gases or flammables are present might result in negative readings. If you don’t have access to fresh air, use a zero air calibration cylinder.

5. Calibrate regularly

Timing may vary based on manufacturers’ recommendations, but it is important to calibrate periodically. Calibrations are quick and are essential making sure your gas meter reads accurately when exposed to gas.

Our inCase Calibration Kits are convenient portable gas detection systems.

6. Bump test before each use

Don’t rely on fresh air values alone. A reading of 0% LEL means nothing if your sensor is poisoned and no longer responding to gas. A quick bump test will let you know if your sensors are working or not.

7. Don’t use expired gas

The expiration date on the calibration gas cylinder should be strictly followed. Calibration gas naturally breaks down on its own. If the gas no longer coincides with the concentration listed on the label, it’s impossible to perform a reliable calibration.

8. Replace sensors before they fail

It is important to keep your meter up to date. Plan on replacing the O2 sensor when the old one expires. It’s good practice to replace the LEL sensor at the same time, especially if exposed to poisons or high concentrations of combustible gases. Toxic sensors should be monitored and replaced when response is less than ideal. When your gas detection instrument is discontinued, upgrade to a current model.

9. Take a systems approach

Good gas detection policy is not just a matter of owning and maintaining equipment. Equipment is just one part of a broader system. Cal stations, wireless communication technology, and kits like our own inCase Calibration Kits are intended to be catalysts for a successful gas detection program.

10. Use your meter for what it was designed to do

Plain and simple, a gas detectors can’t save your life if it’s sitting on the shelf. Owning a meter is not enough. The basic operation and testing of most gas meters is relatively easy. Flammable or toxic gas is not something to be trifled with. Use the right meter for the job, and chances are you will be safe.

This past week, in the Industrial Park (where All Safe Industries is located), a "Shelter-In-Place" was put into effect for those businesses within a one mile radius of a hydrogen fluoride spill. For many people this was the first time they had been involved in a "shelter-in-place" incident. We're going to explain what a "shelter-in-place" means and how you can stay safe during emergencies such as the chemical spill our local businesses faced.

What Shelter-in-Place Means:

Here is how the American Red Cross describes Shelter-in-Place: "One of the instructions you may be given in an emergency where hazardous materials may have been released into the atmosphere is to shelter-in-place. This is a precaution aimed to keep you safe while remaining indoors. (This is not the same thing as going to a shelter in case of a storm.) Shelter-in-place means selecting a small, interior room, with no or few windows, and taking refuge there. It does not mean sealing off your entire home or office building.

It is important to note that there will not be a shelter setup or put in place but instead the preexisting shelter of the building or home that you are in is used.

Don't let safety come as a shock! We all know electricity can cause burns, shocks and electrocution, which can be fatal. So how do we protect ourselves? Your safety is our #1 priority at All Safe Industries, therefore, we want to share some electrical safety tips with you.

Electrical Safety

Electrical Safety & How To Prevent Injuries

Hazard Risk Categories & Arc Ratings

Standard NFPA 70E - 2015 Edition Changes

Product Spotlight

1. Electrical Safety & How To Prevent Injuries

OSHA Regulations and the NFPA 70E for Electrical Safety provide work safety practices to prevent injuries against arc flashes and flash hazards. Besides making sure the equipment being used is properly maintained and working, adequate PPE with the required ratings should always be worn. This can be successfully accomplished by using the Hazard Level Risk and Arc Ratings on PPE. Remember, only your employer can tell you the required level of protection required in your job.

So, you're wearing the proper apparel and equipment, what's next? Below are a few helpful safety tips when it comes to working with electricity.

Take into consideration the flash protection boundary, which is the distance from an exposed live part within which a person could receive a second-degree burn if an electrical arc were to occur.

Know that a flash hazard analysis is a study investigating the potential exposure to arc-flash energy that a worker faces while performing a specific job task. This helps determine the required PPE.

Use the 3-stage safety model: recognize, evaluate and control hazards.

Reminder that low voltage does not mean low danger!

Follow the Standard NFPA 70E

			Arc Flash —
An explosive release of energy caused by an electrical arc. An arc flash results from either a phase to ground or a phase to phase fault caused by such occurrences as accidental contact with electrical systems, build up of conductive dust, corrosion, dropped tools, and improper work procedures. During an arc flash, the temperature can reach 35,000° Fahrenheit, and exposure to an arc flash can result in serious burn injury and death.

			Flash Hazard —
A dangerous condition caused by the release of energy from an electric arc.

2. Hazard Risk Categories & Arc Ratings

The Hazard Risk Category chart is used to determine the necessary arc rating of a garment required to be worn during a job.
The ARC rating determines the protective characteristics of the fabric that is worn. The higher the ARC rating value the greater the protection by a Hazard/Risk Assessment and the resulting HRC.

		HRC (Hazard/Risk Category) —
The five Hazard/Risk categories are specified by the chart listed in NFPA® 70E. The chart, based on specific job tasks, ranges from HRC 1 (which is low risk and allows for 100% treated cotton), up to HRC 4 (which is high risk and requires FR clothing with a minimum arc rating of 40). The HRC is used to determine the necessary arc rating of a garment worn during a given job task.

		Arc Rating —
A value of the energy necessary to pass through any given fabric to cause with 50% probability a second or third degree burn. This value is measured in calories/cm². The necessary Arc Rating for an article of clothing is determined by a Hazard/Risk Assessment and the resulting HRC. Usually measured in terms of ATPV or EBT.

3. Standard NFPA 70E - 2015 Changes

The most recent Standard NFPA 70E (2015) became effective on October 2014. It is updated every three years to ensure the best safety guidelines for electrical safety.
Below are some of the significant changes made in this edition. Get the whole
		2015 Edition here.

		NFPA 70E —
A work standard published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®) that covers aspects of electrical safety in the workplace. It includes the recommendation that those who work with, on or around energized equipment use adequate protection, including FR clothing.

		Significant PPE Changes

Terminology Change

The HRC (Hazard/Risk Category) will now be referred to as Risk Assessment
.

Coverage Requirements Change

The word "coverall" has been added to section (d) on page 3 of the catalogue standard:

“Shirt and coverall sleeves shall be fastened at the wrists…”

“…shirts, coveralls, and jackets shall be closed at the neck.”

Additionally, shirts must also now be tucked into pants to be in-line with OSHA’s recent updates to standard 29 CFR 1910.269.

No More HRC 0

HRC 0 was eliminated from the new PPE Table, since the PPE Table only specifies work within the arc flash boundary. Having an HRC 0 would mean the worker was outside the arc flash boundary and did not need arc-rated PPE or clothing.
However, even with the HRC 0 requirement removed, there are still requirements when it comes to clothing— not wearing any melting fiber clothing when working on or operating energized electrical equipment is an example.

FR Manufacturers

Due to these recent changes, manufacturers will need to modify labeling on arc-rated clothing to reflect the new terminology.

Everyone has heard the debate about the black and blue dress. Is the dress black & blue or white & gold? If you don't know what we're talking about go check out the
Blue & Black Dress article from The Washington Post and get caught up.

While debating about the color of a dress can be somewhat entertaining, there is a more serious matter at hand.

		WHAT COLOR IS MANNY'S JACKET?

Seriously though, is it Hi-Vis Yellow? Hi-vis Lime? Some say yellow while others pretend or maybe really do see lime. The Manny's Jacket debate could go on and on, but there really is only one answer. We've been asking ourselves this question for some time now and the answer we came up with may surprise you.

	Click to Reveal Answer

Answer: IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT COLOR IT IS!

I know it's shocking, but it's also the truth. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter what color Manny's jacket is, as long he's able to be seen and safe. As Manny always likes to say, (or better yet demonstrate because he's a mannequin. He can't talk...) "Having the proper equipment is a crucial part of staying safe."

In case you think taking advice from a mannequin that can't talk isn't the wisest decision, we don't blame you. But consider this, Manny has never been hit by a car or injured on the jobsite because he wears his High Visibility clothing. Just sayin...

Your safety is our #1 priority at All Safe Industries, and while the holidays are finally here, safety is never irrelevant. Therefore, we want to share some winter safety tips with you.

Safety Tips

1. Know the Winter Terms

Knowing the winter weather terms can be very useful and important when planning, traveling and even driving.

		Freezing Rain —
Rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees and power lines.

		Sleet —
Rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground. Sleet also causes moisture on roads to freeze and become slippery.

		Wind Chill —
Temperature it “feels like” when you are outside. The NWS provides a Windchill Chart to show the difference between air temperature and the perceived temperature and the amount of time until frostbite occurs.

		Winter Weather Advisory —
Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. When caution is used, these situations should not be life threatening.

Winter Storm Watch / Warning —
A winter storm is possible in your area. This includes heavy snow and/or ice. A winter storm watch is issued 12 to 36 hours in advance of a potential severe storm. Monitor alerts, check and gather emergency supplies needed if power is lost.

		Blizzard Warning —
Sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater and considerable amounts of falling or blowing snow (reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile) are expected to prevail for a period of three hours or longer.

		Frost/Freeze Warning —
		Below freezing temperatures are expected.

2. Walking Safely in Wintertime — Slips, Trips and Falls

To prevent slips, trips and falls employers should clear walking surfaces of snow and ice as quickly as possible after a winter storm. Both employers and employees should wear the proper footwear for the winter conditions. Footwear with heavy trends for increased traction are recommended. Keep in mind when walking on snow or ice, to keep hands out ready to steady yourself in case of slips.

3. Winter Driving — Emergency Supplies In Your Vehicle

Although employers cannot control roadway conditions, safe driving behaviour can be promoted by setting and enforcing driver safety policies on vehicles and mechanized equipment that workers are required to operate on the job. An emergency supply kit can be kept in a vehicle and can be useful in any type of weather or emergency.

	Emergency supplies can include:

Cellphone or two-way radio

Windshield ice scraper

Snow brush

Flashlight with extra batteries

Shovel

Tow Chain

Traction Aids (bag of sand or cat litter)

Emergency flares

Jumper Cables

Snacks

Water

Road Maps

Blankets

Change of clothes

Tin Can + Matches + Candle + Paper Cup + Clean Snow
In case of extreme emergencies and the danger of low drinking water, snow can be melted and used for drinking water. All that is needed are the ingredients above. Place a small amount of snow in tin can or container and heat until the snow melts. Once it melts, keep adding handfuls of snow until the desired quantity is collected. Note that It is important that snow is melted first to be considered safe to drink. Clean snow should be collected away from work site or roads. The snow should never be yellow.

4. Work Zone Traffic Safety

Workers being struck by vehicles or mobile equipment lead to many work zone fatalities or injuries annually. Drivers may skid or lose control of their vehicles more easily when driving on snow and/or ice covered roads. It is therefore important to properly set up work zones with the traffic controls identified by signs, cones, barrels, and barriers, to protect workers. Workers exposed to vehicular
traffic should wear the appropriate high visibility vest at all times.

5. Exposure Limits for Working in the Cold

Know the signs of hypothermia and various other cold injuries.
A cold environment challenges the worker in three ways: by air temperature, air movement (wind speed), and humidity (wetness).
In order to work safely, these challenges have to be counterbalanced by proper insulation (layered protective clothing), by physical
activity and by controlled exposure to cold (work/rest schedule).

Warning signs of hypothermia can include complaints of nausea, fatigue, dizziness, irritability or euphoria. Workers can also experience pain in their extremities (hands, feet, ears, etc), and severe shivering. Workers should be moved to a heated shelter and seek medical advice when appropriate.

6. Cold Weather PPE

View Cold Weather PPE

Always wear the proper PPE for work and weather conditions. All Safe Industries offers bomber jackets, winter liners, cold weather gloves and socks, hand and toe warmers and more. Winter weather can get very cold and winter clothing will help you stay warm!

Stay safe this winter!

By 2012, that number had decreased to twelve (12). What helped decrease those numbers? Safety awareness. OSHA, with the help of employers, safety and health professions, unions and advocates, have made a tremendous difference in those four decades, helping reduce job injuries, illness and deaths.

Safety: It takes all of us

Each June, the National Safety Council helps remind us that we need to keep bringing awareness to safety issues. This year, the theme is “Safety: It takes all of us”.
It doesn't matter what time of the year it is, where we are located on Earth, or what our names are because safety is as important to every single person that builds our roads to the person working behind the machinery. Yes, even the person behind the desk is at risk for slips or falls. So, how can we work towards a more safe environment?

The National Safety Council has come up with four great safety issues to address every week in June. According to the industry that we belong to, we can modify them. Even five minutes to talk about safety can save a person’s life. Below is a list of the safety issues and a few simple steps to take toward a safer working environment.

June Safety-Related Themes

Week 1: Prevent prescription drug abuse

Week 2: Stop slips, trips and falls

Week 3: Be aware of your surroundings

Week 4: Put an end to distracted driving

Bonus Week: Summer Safety

Tips To Know

Believe it or not, mud is the number one danger for slips, trips and falls. Watch out for mud. If you work around mud, don’t rush but slow down.

Provide guardrails and toe-boards around every elevated open sided platform, floor or runway. As a worker if you are encountering any problems with balance, traction or grip, use handrails available.

Work areas should be clean, clutter-free and hazard-free.

Always take action if you see any unsafe conditions, or any risk-behavior. Hazard Recognition is spotting things that might cause an accident.

Train workers about the job hazards in a language they can understand.

Drive safely to and from work (or anywhere, really). This includes driving attentively. Cell phones are the most common distraction for driving.

Last but not least, talk SAFETY!

Safety Awareness needs to keep happening in the work field to reduce risks. Only then can we keep decreasing the number of injuries and accidental deaths in the workplace.

Resources

http://www.nsc.org/
https://www.osha.gov/
